| What does the future
hold for stem cell research and therapies? |
| Medical researchers
believe that stem cell therapy has the potential to dramatically change the
treatment of human diseases. In the USA, President Barack Obama cleared the way
for a significant increase in federal dollars for stem cell research. Medical
researchers are confident of being able to use technologies derived from stem
cell research to treat a wider variety of diseases including cancer,
Parkinson's disease, spinal cord injuries, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis,
multiple sclerosis, and muscle damage, amongst a number of other impairments
and conditions. This session will focus on the latest advancements in stem cell
therapy and how Mauritius can position itself in the field of stem cell therapy
and research. |

| How can nanotechnology
revolutionise the delivery of healthcare services through its various
applications?
|
| Nanotechnology has revolutionised
the delivery of healthcare services through its various applications which
include nanomedicine, nanosurgery, microtechnologies for medical devices,
nanomaterials, nanoelectronic biosensors and molecular nanotechnology.
Likewise, nanotechnology is gathering more momentum in preclinical
characterisation of nanoparticles intended for cancer therapeutics and
diagnostics. Despite the fact that nanothechnology is rife with challenges,
there is growing consensus on the opportunities of its transformational
potential, more particularly for healthcare applications. Mauritius has
successfully developed a high-tech medical devices industry and now wants to
forge ahead by developing nanomedicine and other related medical
microtechnologies. This session will focus on the applications of
nanotechnology in healthcare and how can Mauritius position itself in this
highly specialised segment. |

| Success stories and
best practices in medical and dental travel |
| According to a report on
medical tourism published by Deloitte, the world medical tourism market is
estimated to be around $60 billion currently and it is expected to grow to $100
billion by 2010. Factors like cost of treatment, long waiting lists and limited
availability of specialist doctors have contributed to the growing popularity
of medical and dental travel. Several countries have successfully positioned
themselves as medical tourism destinations. Likewise, an increasing number of
patients travel for dental procedures. This session will focus of the key
success factors of medical and dental tourism and its potential for Mauritius. |

| Latest trends in
geriatrics and rehabilitative medicine. How can Mauritius position itself as a
destination for geriatrics and rehabilitative medicine?
|
| According to the UN, the
world is currently facing an ageing population. It is estimated that by 2050,
the number of older persons in the world will exceed the number of young for
the first time in history. This trend clearly unveils opportunities in elderly
care, geriatrics, and rehabilitative medicine. An increasing number of retirees
are travelling overseas for retirement. This session will focus on investment
opportunities in geriatrics, elderly care and rehabilitative medicine. |

|
| Biotechnology is
gathering more momentum within the life sciences industry. It has meaningful
applications in drug discovery, vaccine development, pharmacogenomics, gene
therapy and genetic testing, amongst others. This post-genomic era offers
tremendous opportunities for generating new knowledge from biotechnology and
translating it into applications that enhance human health. This session will

| Paving the way from
bioinformatics to genomics and proteomics. What are the challenges facing this
industry? What are the opportunities for Mauritius?
|
| Bioinformatics has
brought together biology, medicine, computer science, statistics, databases and
algorithms. Bioinformatics is no longer a tool for researchers but it is
considered as a subject driving research and it is extensively involved in the
early drug discovery stages. Now that the genomes of several organisms have
been sequenced, it is possible to study the molecular interactions in these
organisms at the genome level and proteome level in silico. Mauritius has the
potential to develop bioinformatics. This session will emphasize on the latest
developments in bioinformatics and its scope for Mauritius which has untapped
biological resources, and diseases that could be studied. |

| Challenges and
opportunities for CROs
|
| The clinical trial
market reached $50 billion last year, and is predicted to grow at an average
rate of 11% to 2018. This growth is driven by the need for pharma companies to
reduce drug development costs and lead time. According to Pharmafocus,
pharmaceutical companies spend approximately 30% of their total R&D budget on
outsourcing and this is growing at the rate of 10-20% annually. There is also
greater emphasis on electronic data capture as well as a greater use of
biomarkers as surrogates for clinical endpoints in studies. Mauritius is
currently putting in place the appropriate legal and regulatory framework for
conducting clinical trials and endeavours to position itself as a biomedical
research hub. This session will feature the challenges and opportunities for
CROs in their quest to reduce the lead time and costs in clinical trials. |

|
| Pre-clinical
research: What are the key success factors? |
| Preclinical development
is a very important phase in drug development process where different types of
preclinical research are conducted, which include pharmacodynamics,
pharmacokinetics and toxicity testing. Despite the fact that preclinical
testing in the research-based pharmaceutical industry has been reduced in
recent years due to both ethical and cost reasons, yet it remains a very
important phase in the process of drug development. This session will focus on
the key success factors of contract and preclinical research and their
implications for Mauritius. |
